Unwanted Music
Host: Scott Boltwood
World / International

Scott doesn’t travel enough; though he’s never traveled to India, Central Asia, or Africa, he’s an avid fan of their music, film, and arts. On the bright side, he thinks of travel as the best opportunity to buy music, and his goal is to bring to you the best music from around the world—Bhangra (Asian-British dance), Flamenco Chill, Bollywood, AfroBeat, European Jazz, contemporary Caberet music, Hip Hop from around the world, and even some of the most distinctive voices from closer to home (Tom Waits, Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Palace, and others).

Building a Mystery
Host: Dr. Wendy Doucette
Talk

Wendy started out as a French professor specializing in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The first epic mystery she encountered on a personal basis was, “Who Killed French in U. S. Education?” (It was Spanish). With no students capable of discussing classical theatre or the Enlightenment and seduced by the lure of neighboring Silicon Valley, she became a telecommunications engineer and department manager at the largest voice mail company in the world. Faced with her second personal epic mystery, “Why Are All the Tech Jobs Getting Outsourced?”, she began her third (and final) career as a librarian because librarians are cool, literate people who do high tech stuff and know everything. Bat-Girl is also a librarian.

As the system coordinator for the Holston Associated Libraries, Wendy keeps the library software running for Emory & Henry and King Colleges, and the Washington County and Tazewell County Public Libraries.

Wendy likes to read mysteries where people are generally happy and eat heartily without being overly wholesome or “cutesy.”  Her preferred crime is kidnapping, not murder, because there’s intrinsically more suspense.

Although a longtime mystery reader, Wendy was chronically incapable of ever correctly guessing who did it.  Thanks to four intensive semesters of Law & Order, her skills have much improved.  She now spends most of her time solving real-life cat-based mysteries, such as “Whose Hairball Is This?” and “Who Shredded Mommy’s Skirt?”

Wombats and Music
Host: Harry Baya
Talk / 50's / Country

Wombats & Music showcases a wide range of music, interviews and a few surprises. The music includes country, folk, string band, soft-rock, and 50s hits. You are not likely to hear opera or classical music, but you might hear your neighbor's string band, or three students singing acapella.

Harry is on the IT staff at E&H, specializing in the use of technology in teaching and learning. He lived in Abingdon until he was six and the New York City area for many years. He returned to Abingdon in 2004. Harry is an amateur musician, loves to sing (mostly folk, gospel, shape note, and rounds), and has been learning Appalachian ("Old Time") fiddle for two years. If you make the kind of music featured here, and would like to be on this show, let Harry know.

The “Wombat” part of the title, and the show, is intended to be somewhat mysterious, and ambiguous, and leaves the door open to include anything that he thinks would entertain listeners.

Two-Handed Economics
Host: Linda Dobkins
Talk

Dr. Linda Harris Dobkins is an associate professor of economics, in her 13th year at Emory & Henry. Teaching economics at the college level is her third career. Her first career was as a reporter for television, radio, and newspapers in Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma. (In between she taught math in Louisiana.)

Her particular research interests are urban systems, regional economic growth, and immigration. She teaches macroeconomics and answers questions these days about the state of the economy from friends and neighbors as well as students. She also teaches international trade and money and banking.

When she’s not teaching economics, she works on the core curriculum at Emory & Henry and makes her personal contribution to the new core by teaching a Transitions I course called, “Baseball: More than a Game.” That reflects a passion she shares with her husband Dave, who is faithfully waiting for the season to start so he can watch several games a day.
