Mass Communications 410 -- Advanced Video Production
Fall 2004
EHC-TV
Instructor: Dr. Keller. Ext. 6822
Office Hours: MWF: 2:30 - 3:30. IÕm also available in the Studio immediately before or after the Tuesday/Thursday 3:00
Course Objectives:
To produce broadcast quality video presentations, including gathering information, writing clearly, and combining accurate information with appropriate sound and video. Also, to learn the basics of television studio procedures while producing programming for a general cable audience.
Material presentation:
Scripts will be prepared to accompany your video work. Scripts and other assignments should be ready in both electronic (on a disk for now) and print form each Tuesday. If there is more than one page, staple. Please be sure the computer printer yields copies that are easy to read.
Video package and VOB expectations:
Video packages and VOBÕs are expected to include well-lit, high quality video, nat sound and nat sound breaks as well as stand-ups.
Grades: making an A
Grading standards will be high and will consider project objectives, amount of work applied, and success in meeting professional quality production values. In general, the requirements for an A will be as follows:
*complete a news package each week with script and other requirements for including it in a newscast. News value should be strong.
*complete a major, in-depth studio interview
*attend all classes and execute studio requirements for completing the newscast
*invest time in at least three extra studio sessions
Package ideas:
Class projects should include, but are not limited to:
*A personalized campus story such as the following:
international students on campus
publish or perish for professors
tuition hikes
service learning on campus
students working full time
students with children
students with learning differences
*A public records-based story.
*A localized national story.
*A court story.
*A public meeting story.
*A 30-minute broadcast interview.
LATE ASSIGNMENTS.
Late assignments or unfulfilled responsibilities cannot be tolerated in light of our deadlines for completing newscasts. My standard policy is that students who fail to meet an assignment on time can expect to receive a Ò50Ó, but, depending on circumstances, will receive no higher grade than a 60.
GENERAL MISSION
Remember that the College Mission Statement includes the motto, ÒIncrease in Excellence.Ó Please strive to employ the motto in your academic and personal endeavors. We would like to be a special community where each person is committed to service to others as well as to intellectual achievement. Imagine the kind of world youÕd like to live in and create it -- beginning with this class.
DEPOSIT
As much as I regret having to implement this procedure, I have learned that some people do not always follow the above advice. In the past, we have lost as much as $400.00 worth of equipment in one semester, just because of carelessness. As a result, I am requiring a $25.00 refundable deposit. If all the equipment is accounted for at the end of the semester, this money will be refunded. As you can see, you are each responsible for everyone elseÕs deposit.
RESPONSIBILITIES REGARDING EQUIPMENT
Believe it or not, there are some students who occasionally pass through Emory & Henry who are not considerate of others, and once in a rare, rare while those students show up in Mass Communications classes. Surely, there will be no one like that in this class. However, just to encourage responsible use of equipment, some consequences will be established for ignoring established protocol.
CHECK OUT PROCEDURE
The procedure for signing out equipment is very simple:
When you take equipment, put your name on the board on the date you take it.
Put the time you take it and the time you will return it.
Those who do not follow procedure or who keep equipment in their rooms or cars overnight are subject to a grade penalty. Grade on the news package assigned will be lowered by one letter for both partners when equipment is not returned after the shoot or is not signed out properly. These procedures are established to make our working together easy. The goal is not to make your life difficult. Therefore, if you have special circumstances and need special arrangements, please discuss the situation with the professor.
RESERVE EQUIPEMENT PROCEDURE
To reserve equipment, write your name and ÒreservedÓ on the date you want to use the equipment. List the checkout time and return time.
RESERVE EDITING TIME Ð Our semester will go much smoother if each student claims a regular and specific editing time.
