Emory & Henry mass communications graduates are qualified for entry into a wide variety of fields. They find success in print, television, radio, web design and maintenance, public relations, advertising, and more. Some of their careers are more extreme, like state patrol or race car driver.
The Outstanding Senior in Mass Communications Award is given each spring to a student who has maintained a high academic average and who has played responsible roles in campus media. This list includes these graduates and their current careers.
1988 - Eric Scott -News photographer and editor WJZ-TV, Baltimore, Md.
An Emmy Award winner, Scott works behind the camera for WJZ-TV in Baltimore, Maryland. He has covered a wide variety of issues and events, including the 1998 Winter Olympics in Japan
1989 - Linda Coutant - Editor of the News Bureau Appalachain State University
Coutant has demonstrated great versatility as a communications specialist. At Appalachian State University, she serves as editor of Appalachian Today magazine for alumni, and producer of Appalachian Perspective , a monthly television program aired by 11 cable outlets across North Carolina. She has won awards for visual and audio productions. Before beginning her work at Appalachian State, she served as a news writer for the Johnson City Press in Johnson City, Tennessee.
"As a student who did well in both print and broadcasting, I remember being indecisive about which career path to pursue after graduation. I worked as a newspaper reporter for awhile to hone my writing skills. But, my current position at Appalachian State University's public affairs office lets me play in both mediaand a bunch of cool new ones, too, as technologies evolve."

By studying both print journalism and broadcasting amid a liberal arts context in the 1980s, I was totally prepared for emerging technologies and the challenges they bring to a small PR shop.
