2004 featured author -- Maggie Anderson

Born in New York City to parents with roots in Appalachia, poet Maggie Anderson moved to West Virginia at age thirteen. She earned her B.A. and M.A. degrees in English at West Virginia University, where she also received a master’s degree in social work. Her first book of poems, Years That Answer, appeared in 1980 and has been followed by three others: Cold Comfort (1986), A Space Filled with Moving (1992), and Windfall: New and Selected Poems (2000). She is also the editor of Hill Daughter, a
volume of new and selected poems by former West Virginia Poet Laureate Louise McNeill. Her awards and honors include fellowships in poetry from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Ohio Arts Council, the MacDowell Colony, and the West Virginia Arts and Humanities Commission. Since 1989 she has served on the faculty at Kent State University. There she directs the Wick Poetry Center, edits the Wick Poetry Series, and has twice won Distinguished Teaching Awards.
