English 450:  Holocaust as Narrative

Anthology 2005

detail from Otherfly collage

We Remain

It was you who caught me, who kept me from falling out of the sky,
And called me a princess.
You, my hero,
Who always kept me far out of harm’s way.

And only you could keep a smile on my face,
Despite the Devil knocking down our door.
You made me believe we could ignore those men,
Pacing our streets with their rifles held high, smiling at our son.

But your stories only kept them at bay for so long,
and when I wasn’t looking,
they came to our home, and they took you
and they took our son
And left nothing but your chair, flat on its back.

And now I sit with your son in my lap,
While he explains to me how we’ve won.
How we beat all the others, and we won.
We won.

Your stories convinced me once that we could win.
That somehow our little family could slip past them,
Remain unseen by that watchful eye and survive.

And somehow, we managed to make it through—
Your son and your princess remain,
Ready to live out all the stories you promised us,
Never forgetting all you gave up for us.
