Types of Financial Aid

The primary types of financial aid are grants and scholarships, outright awards which do not obligate the student for repayment; loans, a form of aid which the student agrees to repay at some later date; and employment, work-study assignments for which the student receives a wage. The funding for these aid programs comes from a variety of federal, state, and institutional sources.

Federally-funded aid programs include Pell Grants, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (SEOG), College Work-Study (CWS), Perkins Loans (formerly National Defense Student Loans), and Stafford Loans. The Pell and SEOG programs provide outright grants which do not require repayment. CWS jobs involve the student in paid employment, usually on campus.

The Perkins and Stafford programs provide for low-interest loans which must be repaid. Both Perkins and Stafford Loans come directly from the Department of Education through the college. All these federal programs have the following eligibility requirements:

• Be a U.S. citizen or an eligible noncitizen
• Have financial need
• Be working toward a degree or certificate (except for Stafford Loans)
• Be making satisfactory academic progress as defined in the college catalog
• Meet any other federal requirements which may be established

State sponsored aid programs include the College Scholarship Assistance Program (CSAP) and the Tuition Assistance Grant (TAG) program. CSAP provides grants based on financial need. The TAG program is sponsored by the state to help narrow the “tuition gap” between private colleges and public institutions. It is not based on need. For both CSAP and TAG, the eligibility requirements are as follows:

• Be a full-time undergraduate student in an approved program of study
• Be a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S.
• Not have previously received a bachelor’s degree
• Have been a bona fide Virginia domiciliary resident for at least twelve consecutive months by the opening of the college’s fall semester.
• Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Institutional aid programs at Emory & Henry include a wide range of scholarships. Most scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and/or other forms as specified by the Financial Aid Office. Several scholarships are based on academic achievement or other special criteria; among these scholarships are a grant to any student who is the child of a minister and grants to students who are planning careers in Christian service. Also there are a number of competitive merit scholarships which are awarded each year to entering first-year and returning students. The minimum eligibility requirements for institutional aid are that the student be admitted by and enrolled in the college, be making satisfactory academic progress as defined in the college catalog, and be free of serious disciplinary penalties. Additional requirements may apply to specific aid programs; details are available from the Financial Aid Office.
