Satisfactory academic progress to maintain eligibility for financial aid

Any student who receives financial aid must demonstrate the ability to do satisfactory academic work and to progress measurably toward his or her baccalaureate degree each semester. Accordingly, at the end of each semester, every student’s academic progress is evaluated. A student is deemed to be making satisfactory progress if he or she meets the following criteria in terms of cumulative GPA and credit hours accumulated by the end of each progressive semester:

By the end of the first year, the cumulative GPA must be at least 1.80. In the first semester, a total of at least 12 semester hours must be earned. In the second semester, a total of at least 24 semester hours must be earned.

By the end of the second year, the cumulative GPA must be at least 1.90. In the first semester, a total of at least 36 semester hours must be earned. In the second semester, a total of at least 48 semester hours must be earned.

By the end of the third year, the cumulative GPA must be at least 2.00. In the first semester, a total of at least 60 semester hours must be earned. In the second semester, a total of at least 72 semester hours must be earned.

By the end of the fourth year, the cumulative GPA must be at least 2.00. In the first semester, a total of at least 84 semester hours must be earned. In the second semester, a total of at least 96 semester hours must be earned.

In measuring satisfactory academic progress, it is further understood that:

  • A full-time student is eligible to receive financial aid for a maximum of five academic years.
  • Course withdrawals, repetitions, incompletes and/or non-credit courses do not excuse the student from meeting the minimum semester hours and GPA requirements.
  • A student who loses his or her financial aid due to a lack of satisfactory progress can make a written appeal to the faculty Committee on Admissions and Financial Aid. Under certainmitigating circumstances such as the death of a relative, an injury or illness of the student, or special circumstances, the committee may grant the appeal if the committee determines that the circumstances warrant.
  • A student who loses his or her financial aid due to a lack of satisfactory progress will again be eligible to receive financial aid when he or she meets the minimum requirements at the end of any subsequent semester.
  • Courses transferred from other institutions during the period of matriculation at Emory & Henry will be included in the number of semester hours earned.
  • Part-time students will have their eligibility measured on an equivalency basis.
  • Failure to meet minimum requirements will result in financial aid penalties: If a student fails to meet satisfactory academic progress at the end of any academic semester, he or she will be placed on financial aid warning. If, at the end of any subsequent semester, the student again does not attain minimum satisfactory academic progress, he or she will be considered ineligible to receive financial aid for the following academic semester. A student may appeal this decision in the following manner.

In order to appeal the suspension of aid, a student must take the following steps:

  • The student will indicate in writing to the Committee on Admissions and Financial Aid: (a) reasons why he or she did not achieve minimum academic requirements, and (b) reasons why the aid should be reinstated.
  • The letter will be forwarded to the Coordinator of Financial Aid who will, in turn, present the appeal to the Committee on Admissions and Financial Aid.
  • The committee will review the appeal and determine whether the financial aid should be reinstated. The student will be advised, in writing, of the decision.
  • The committee will have the authority to approve financial aid for a one-semester probationary period in order to give the student the opportunity to raise his or her GPA and/or semester hour deficiency to the required level.
