Theatre
The Department of Theatre offers both a major and a minor. In addition,
the department offers a cooperative pre-professional program in association
with Barter Theatre of Abingdon, Virginia, a professional regional theatre.
There are four specific areas of concentration within the pre-professional
program, all of which lead to a B.A. degree in theatre.
The department also offers the option of an add-on endorsement for those
with teaching licensure or holding an endorsement in another teaching
area. Consult the Department of Education for licensure requirements in
theatre arts.
Theatre (B.A.)
Objectives: To provide the basis for a lifetime appreciation of the theatre
and/or for a professional or educational vocation in the theatre.
Requirements: Core courses are 100, either 200 and 201 or 233X and 234X,
205, 210, 215, 400 or 470. Three additional courses are chosen in consultation
with the department. The foreign language requirement is met by completing
101 and 102 in the same foreign language. The college mathematics requirement
is met by Mathematics 120, 121, 123, or 151, or Statistics 161, 162, or
163. Students also complete a minor in another discipline.
Pre-Professional
A student who wishes to pursue the pre-professional degree will choose one
of the four tracks listed below. As part of their program of study, students
will enroll in the Professional Theatre Experience course each semester.
This one-hour course will consist of professional workshops conducted by
Barter professionals and attendance at Barter productions, followed by talk-backs
with Barter professionals. During the junior year and senior year, students
will be allowed to observe Barter rehearsals and have the opportunity of
shadowing a Barter professional.
Theatre - Acting (B.A.)
Requirements: 100, either 200 and 201 or 233X and 234X, 205, 206, 245,
300, 301, 305, 370, and 405. Students must also complete English 360,
Mass Communications 441 or Theatre 335, Contemporary Dance (three semester
hours), one semester hour per semester of Professional Theatre Experience,
twelve semester hours of Practicum, and Theatre 400 or 470. The college
mathematics requirement is met by Mathematics 120, 121, 123, or 151, or
Statistics 161, 162, or 163. Students also complete a minor in another
discipline or a contextual and support area chosen in consultation with
the department.
Theatre - Directing (B.A.)
Requirements: 100, either 200 and 201 or 233X and 234X, 205, 206, 210,
215, 245, 300, 315, and 350. Students must also complete English 332 or
Philosophy 333, Theatre 370, 415, one semester hour per semester of Professional
Theatre Experience, twelve semester hours of Practicum, and Theatre 400
or 470. The college mathematics requirement is met by Mathematics 120,
121, 123, or 151, or Statistics 161, 162, or 163. Students also complete
a minor in another discipline or a contextual and support area chosen
in consultation with the department.
Theatre - Production (B.A.)
Requirements: 100, 110, either 200 and 201 or 233X and 234X, 205, 210,
215, 245, 310, and 350 (six semester hours). Students must also complete
English 271 or Mass Communications 441, English 332 or Philosophy 333,
Theatre 370, 415, one semester hour per semester of Professional Theatre
Experience, twelve semester hours of Practicum, and Theatre 400 or 470.
The college mathematics requirement is met by Mathematics 120, 121, 123,
or 151, or Statistics 161, 162, or 163. Students also complete a minor
in another discipline or a contextual and support area chosen in consultation
with the department.
Theatre - Musical Theatre (B.A.)
Requirements: 100, either 200 and 201 or 233X and 234X, 205, 206, 245,
300, 305, and 335. Students must also complete Music 150 or 312, Contemporary
Dance (six semester hours), Voice Class or Private Voice or Choir (four
semester hours), Piano Class or Private Piano (two semester hours), one
semester hour per semester of Professional Theatre Experience, twelve
semester hours of Practicum, and Theatre 400 or 470. The college mathematics
requirement is met by Mathematics 120, 121, 123, or 151, or Statistics
161, 162, or 163. Students also complete a minor in another discipline
or a contextual and support area chosen in consultation with the department.
Minor in Theatre
A student may minor in theatre by completing 100, either 200 and 201 or
233X and 234X, 205 or 210, and two other courses chosen in consultation
with the department.
