Sociology and Anthropology

Sociology (B.A.)
Objective: To offer students a broad background in sociology, preparing them for graduate study by introducing philosophical foundations, critical evaluation, data collection and analysis, approaches to problem-solving, and topical outlines of major subfields.
Requirements: Core courses are 101, 229, 334, 335, and Statistics 162 or equivalent. The college mathematics requirement is met by Mathematics 123 or 151. The senior project is 450 or 460. Students must also fulfill either an advanced mathematics or an advanced language component. The advanced mathematics component is met by Mathematics 151 and Computer Science 180; the advanced language requirement is met by French 201 or Spanish 201. In satisfying the major, students may elect to take up to five pre-approved courses outside the department.

Students also select a minor in another discipline or the following contextual and support area:
(a) At least one course to develop research skills, chosen from Economics 352; English 321; Geography 240, 340; History 215; Languages 101, 102, 201; Mathematics 151, 152, 201; Computer Science 180; Philosophy 231; Political Science 400; Psychology 211, 240, 315.
(b) At least three courses to promote an understanding of the historical and philosophical tradition in which sociology has developed, chosen from Art 221, 222; Economics 225; English courses; History courses; Music 301, 302; Philosophy 211; Religion 131, 132, 311, 312, 313, 355.
(c) At least two courses to develop wider knowledge about the human condition, chosen from Biology 117, 210, 312; Economics courses; English 333; Geography courses; History courses; Language 300; Philosophy courses; Political Science courses; Psychology courses; Religion courses.

Anthropology (B.A.)
Objective: To offer students a broad background in anthropology, preparing them for graduate study by introducing philosophical foundations, critical evaluation, data collection and analysis, approaches to problem-solving, and topical outlines of major subfields.
Requirements: Core courses are Sociology 103, 221, 334, 335, and Statistics 162 or equivalent. The college mathematics requirement is met by Mathematics 123 or 151. The senior project is 450 or 460. Students must also fulfill either an advanced mathematics or an advanced language component. The advanced mathematics component is met by Mathematics 151 and Computer Science 180; the advanced language requirement is met by French 201 or Spanish 201. Minor in Sociology
A student may minor in sociology by completing 101, 334, 335, and three topical courses in sociology approved by the department chair.
