Public policy and community service

The Appalachian Center for Community Service coordinates instruction and oversees service learning opportunities related to the Public Policy and Community Service major, a liberal arts, interdisciplinary major leading to the B.A. degree, designed to lead to careers in nonprofit organizations and government agencies and in fields related to human services, community development, the church, and social change.

Public Policy and Community Service (B.A.)
Objectives: To instill an understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of the study of public policy making and community service; to give practical meaning to the pedagogical philosophy that places the teaching of citizens and the formation of character and community at the center of liberal education; to provide firm grounding in the concepts of citizenship, community service, democratic policy making, and social justice; to develop students’ leadership skills; to provide students with concepts and skills in community-centered analysis and action research; to develop students’ analytical, written, and oral skills; to help students better understand the impact of local, regional, national, and global structures and institutions; to offer service learning components in all courses that permit students to apply what they have learned in class and explore career interests; to empower students by enabling them to become agents of change; and to link our curriculum with our surrounding community, thereby helping the college better serve this community and the Appalachian region.
