EDUC 503 Contemporary Theories of Human Growth and Development: Implications for Teaching
Intermediate level course designed to introduce and explore prominent theories of intellectual, personality, and moral and social development of children and adolescents as they develop in diverse contexts. Emphasis on how children learn, and the importance of the social context that surrounds and influences cognitive development and learning. Construction of a practical understanding of human adaptation that will enable more effective teaching.

EDUC 504 Measurement, Accountability, and Research in Education
Exploration of the educational accountability movement in the American public schools. Basic statistical measurement and research concepts and skills learned and applied in analyzing current standardized test data and in developing and interpreting valid teacher-made assessment devices. Design of an action research project in a school setting.

EDUC 505 Contemporary Issues and Problems in Education
Selected contemporary issues, opportunities, successes, and apparent failures of the American public schools. Consideration of issues in appropriate historical, social, and philosophical contexts and analysis in light of current goals and expectations for schooling.

EDUC 509 Action Research Practicum
Design and implementation of an action research project within a school setting that includes children of differing abilities. Practical, problem-based, and professional development criteria; curricular changes and teaching and learning strategies. One to four semester hours.

EDUC 510 Language Development
Speech and language development using psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic data. Language acquisition, phonological development, syntactic development, semantic development, and cultural differences. Prerequisite: admission to M.A.Ed. program or permission of instructor.

EDUC 512 Needs of the Exceptional Reader/Learner
Overview of special education, including characteristics and needs of exceptional students and readers; legal aspects of instructional programming and program evaluation in special education and reading. Prerequisite: admission to M.A.Ed. program or permission of instructor.

EDUC 518 Supervision of Instruction
Introduction to supervision, emphasizing skills for a supervisor to perform effectively in a leadership position. Special attention to developing skill in human relations, group processes, and personnel administration and evaluation, particularly in reading/language arts programs. Prerequisite: permission of instructor. One or two semester hours. Repeatable for credit to a maximum of three semester hours.

EDUC 600 Graduate Seminar
Selected content, pedagogy, movements, or issues in the K-12 curriculum. Prerequisites: graduate status and permission of instructor.

EDUC 601 Independent Study
Advanced independent research in a special area of education. Prerequisite: permission of the Director of the M.A.Ed. Program in consultation with the Chair of the English Department and the Chair of the Education Division. One to four semester hours.
