An inquiry into historical and contemporary occurrences of censorship and an examination of the values underlying freedom of expression in the United States. Preparation for making moral and ethical decisions about free expression in a democracy. (Mass Communications Department)

Values and value conflicts which underlie recent developments in biology and medicine. Issues including abortion, euthanasia, medical experimentation, genetic research, and allocation of scarce medical resources. (Philosophy Department)

Distinction between corporate and individual behavior and responsibility. Application of moral reasoning to contemporary issues in business context, e.g. truth in advertising, ecological responsibility, product liability. (Business Administration Department)

EINQ 312 Utopia: Inquiry into the Good Life
Major aspects and problems of utopias, particularly in the complex technological culture of the modern age. Literary classics whose visions of the good life provide a basis for understanding and testing personal values. (English Department)

Consideration of value conflicts in society that arise by virtue of gender. Application of moral reasoning to issues such as preferential treatment, gender-oriented language, pay equity, insurance, marriage, child-rearing, and women in sports, in religion, and in the military. Examination of the history and continuing impact of racism in the United States and application of moral reasoning to the contemporary issues raised by the legacy of racism. (English Department)

The role of technology in modern society. Moral issues arising from contemporary technological problems, e.g. scarce energy resources, air and water pollution, nuclear waste disposal. (Physics Department)

EINQ 321 Value Issues in the Investigation and Control of Individual Behavior
Situations of value conflict in the actions of psychologists and other persons who may influence, shape, or control the behavior of persons; examples of psychological research dealing with situations requiring value-related choices; social influence on and psychological development of moral behavior and the making of value-related choices. Ethical dilemmas in the application of biological technology. Differences between biological knowledge as a tool and as a weapon in the area of genetic screening and counseling, race and I.Q., and genetic manipulation and sanctity of life. (Biology Department)

EINQ 330 Realms of Responsibility in the Social Sciences
Major intellectual traditions in the history of the social sciences; patterns of ethical responsibility typically advocated in each tradition. Case studies illustrating tensions in relationships between social scientists, respondents, informants, host communities, governments, agencies, and businesses. (Sociology Department)

EINQ 332 Moral Choices and Christian Faith
Contemporary approaches to the relationship between values and the Christian faith. Exploration of possible Christian responses to such issues as violence, abortion, economic justice, environmental concerns, and sexuality. (Religion Department)

EINQ 333 Political Economy
Consideration of the value conflicts that arise in choosing among alternative economic institutions and policies. Emphasis on the moral criteria which underlie such choices. (Economics Department)

EINQ 335 Christianity and Socioeconomic Moral Decisions
Basic understanding of Christian moral principles and application to current socioeconomic issues. Corporate social responsibilities; societal moral issues, including sexism and racism; and individual moral issues, including sexual behavior and abortion. (Business Administration Department)

EINQ 337 Ethics and Responsibility in the Information Age
Exploration of personal values as they relate to existing and developing ethical and social issues arising from the pervasive influence of information technology on modern individuals and society. (Mass Communications Department)

EINQ 350 Special Topics in Ethical Inquiry
