Objective: To promote understanding of the concept of global interdependence and appreciation for those global concerns which transcend Western culture; to deal with these issues by studying a region or idea with non-Western origins.
Requirement: Every student takes one Global Studies course. Prerequisite: junior status.

GLST 408 Toward a Christian Understanding of Different Cultures
Historical and contemporary models of Christian encounters with people from different cultures. (Religion Department)

GLST 410 Globalization and the Human Condition
Focus on the traditional balance of power between nation-states in the context of U.S. dominance; the interaction between nation-states and global markets; the relationship between individuals and the nation-states; and globalization as it expands and accelerates the encounters among cultures and civilizations. GLST 412 Liberation Theology
Understanding and evaluation of recent forms of the radical vision of discipleship which Christianity presents, with their biblical roots: Third World, African-American, Feminist, and Gay/Lesbian. (Religion Department)

GLST 415 The World’s Women
Introduction to the lives of women around the globe in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, with particular attention to the Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia, and the West. (History Department)

GLST 420 Food, Plants, and the Biosphere: Interdependencies
The ecological interdependence of people and plants as it relates to food production in developing nations; examples of international interdependencies and case studies illustrating the tensions which result when interdependencies are ignored. (Biology Department)

GLST 422 Worlds of Art
Art of the Arabic world, Africa, India, Latin America, and the Far East. A broad guided visual survey and study of the ability of art to reflect culture and the intermingling of cultures in a given region.

GLST 430 A New International Economic Order
Examination of demand for new international order involving major restructuring of social, political, and economic relationships between emerging and developing nations. Historical causes for current conflict; impact of various proposals. (Economics Department)

GLST 431 Food, Energy, and Agriculture
Dimensions and patterns of world food production and human impact of hunger; constraints affecting agricultural growth and expansion; new food technologies; effect of energy cost and availability of food production. (Geography Department)

GLST 433 The First Global Civilization: Encounter and Interdependence
Analysis of value systems represented by Islamic, Asian, African, and Western traditions with reference to major global problems such as human rights, energy, natural resources, war. (Political Science Department)

GLST 436 The First World, Second World, and Third World: Origins and Development of International Blocs Since World War II
Historical, political, economic, geographic, ideological, and international factors which influenced the development of blocs of nations following World War II. (History Department)

GLST 437 International Wildlife Conservation
Impact of human social, economic, and political activities on plant and animal communities. Examination of efforts and strategies for management and conservation. (Biology Department)

GLST 450 Special Topics in Global Studies
Studies of particular global issues based on current topics and/or faculty or student interest.
