Forestry
cooperative program

Emory & Henry participates in a cooperative program with the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies at Duke University which leads to a master’s degree in forestry (M.F.) or environmental management (M.E.M.). Students who desire the master’s degree must carefully plan their E&H undergraduate coursework, following guidelines set up jointly by representatives of Emory & Henry and Duke. A wide range of undergraduate majors are considered acceptable, but those which have proved most suitable are in the natural and social sciences, pre-engineering, management, and environmental studies. Coursework in Duke’s School of Forestry and Environmental Studies is taught at a level which assumes that students have had at least one year each in biology, economics, and college level mathematics. Preparation in biology should include some work in botany. Courses in economics should have a significant component of microeconomics. Preparation in mathematics should include calculus, computer science, and statistics. Although students without this level of preparation may be accepted for admission, any deficiencies should be made up in formal course work, independent study, or other possibilities agreed upon by the applicant and the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies.

The program has been designed to accommodate students either upon completion of the bachelor’s degree or after three years of study. Those highly qualified students who reach a satisfactory level of preparation in three years of undergraduate study may be able to complete the master’s degree in one summer session and four semesters at Duke, earning at least 60 units of credit. Students who complete the bachelor’s degree before enrolling at Duke may have the 60-unit requirement reduced for acceptable undergraduate work of satisfactory quality. Duke reserves the right to evaluate the applicability of the undergraduate work and, in all cases, the minimum requirements for a master’s degree will be completion of 30 units of credit and two semesters of residency at Duke. Emory & Henry students in the program must satisfy Duke’s admissions requirements before gaining admittance to the university’s School of Forestry and Environmental Management. Interested students should consult with the program director prior to or immediately after enrolling at Emory & Henry.
