Scope/Content: Includes a journal, books of sermons, writings, copies of Civil War pension applications and correspondence, pictures, and newspaper clippings of Daniel Atkins.
Biographical Sketch: Daniel H. Atkins entered Emory & Henry College on 17 August 1871 as a sophomore. While attending Emory & Henry he belonged to the Calliopean Literary Society and was a tutor in ancient languages. Atkins graduated first in his class of twenty three in June 1874, and received the bachelor of arts degree. Before attending Emory & Henry Atkins was in the Grayson County Civil War Reserves (Co. B 4th VA Reserves). Atkins was a minister for 58 years, a president of Weaverville College in North Carolina, Professor and President of Convallis College in Oregon, and editor of the Christian Advocate, a North Carolina State Methodist Paper. He died in Asheville in 1928, and is buried in Asheville’s Riverside Cemetery.
